Five facts about mental health

1. World Mental Health Day is on 10 October, with this year’s theme being ‘mental health is a universal human right’.1 The aim of the day is to raise awareness around mental health issues and the need for good mental healthcare for all.
2. 25% of people in England will experience some kind of mental health problem each year, with one in six reporting a common mental health problem each week.2
3. 23% of Black or Black British people report experiencing a common mental health problem each week, compared to only 17% of White British people.2 Also, people who identify as LGBTQ+ in England are approximately two to three times more likely than heterosexual people to experience long-term mental health problems. 2
4. In 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that one in seven of the world’s adolescents had a mental disorder, compared to one in six adults.3,4
5. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-29 year-olds, and people with severe mental health conditions often die up to two decades early.5
